Kitten Wellness Care
Welcoming a new kitten into your family is an exciting time, but it can also bring up many questions and concerns – especially for first time cat owners. All of us at Van Meter Veterinary Clinic are here to provide guidance for you and your new kitten to give them the best possible start in life. Our veterinarians are happy to provide you with guidance and answer any questions you may have about caring for your new kitten and keeping them happy and healthy for years to come.
Kitten Wellness Exam
Please bring your new kitten to us for a wellness exam as soon as possible after bringing your kitten home. The kitten wellness exam allows our veterinarians to get a first overall look for any outwardly visible signs of disease and to be sure your kitten is healthy. This is the most important aspect of any wellness visit. During your kitten’s wellness exam, we will answer any questions you may have about your kitten, including litterbox training, nutritional questions, behavioral questions and any other questions you may have about your new kitten.
Kitten Vaccinations
In addition to the recommended core vaccines, our veterinarians will create a custom vaccination schedule that fits your kitten’s needs and lifestyle. This will ensure that your kitten is protected from any diseases he or she is likely to be exposed to. There are many diseases that are preventable through the judicious use of vaccines, so it is important to create an individualized protocol early in life to protect both your kitten and your family. Kitten vaccines must be given as a series of injections at prescribed intervals, so it is essential that you are on time for your kitten’s scheduled vaccinations. Immunizations are started at 6-8 weeks of age and are repeated every 3-4 weeks until the kitten is 4 months old.
Microchipping
Just as vaccines protect your pet from disease and illness, microchips help keep your kitten safe if they are lost or stolen. The unique identifier in your pet’s microchip will help bring them home safely, providing shelters and animal hospitals with your contact information to reunite you with your pet.
Your Kitten’s First Visit
In preparation for your kitten’s first visit with us, please bring the health information provided to you by the seller or shelter. We also ask that you bring a fresh stool sample and bring your kitten in a secure carrier.
